Glass expands when it heats up and contracts when it cools. A windshield parked outside an Orlando office can easily reach 130 degrees or more by mid-afternoon. Then the driver gets in, blasts the air conditioning at the glass, and the inside surface cools rapidly while the outside stays hot. That temperature difference creates stress across the glass — and a chip is a stress concentrator. Every cycle pushes the microscopic fractures at its edges a little further.

What This Means Practically

  • Park in shade when you can. Less heat soak means less expansion stress.
  • Ease into the A/C. If you have unrepaired damage, aim the vents away from the glass for the first few minutes.
  • Avoid slamming doors. The pressure pulse inside the cabin flexes the glass — small, but it adds up on damaged windshields.

A repair done while the damage is still small preserves the factory glass and costs a fraction of a replacement. Once the crack runs, repair is off the table.
